Submitted by Anonymous This question is really hard for me because I have so many great memories of when I was growing and my parents taking my brother and me down the shore to go fishing and crabbing or to the lake with all my cousins, aunts and uncles. So many wonderful times spent with family. You don’t really realize how much the time spent with family means until you get older and the family members begin to pass, your children and grand-children grow up and before you know it everything changes….oh how much I miss those days and all the people who have gone before me. But, back to the wonderful memories! My Dad always had a boat and each time he bought a new one they got bigger. He loved to fish and be on the water. The girls were in grammar school and my parents decided to purchase a small vacation home in Tuckerton, NJ, which was a lagoon property. My Dad loved it so much because he could put his boat in the water right behind his house and he could go fishing any time he wanted too! Plus, we could all crab from the dock out back or sit on the porch at night and watch the beautiful sunset! The girls had such fun learning to fish and crab with my father. We made many great memories there….and it brought him so much joy to have us all together. One summer that really stands out was the time Mike and I took the girls to Disney. They were teenagers and we thought it would be fun to go one last time as a family. We didn’t have a lot of money so we drove down all through the night. Mike and I would take turns driving and sleeping. Because we were driving we had the ability to stop wherever we wanted on the way down. One of our favorite places we loved to stop at was “South of the Boarder.” It is this crazy, fun place about half way to Florida that we loved! You could eat, shop, take pictures, use the rest room and walk around for a while to break up the trip. We gave each of them money and said they could buy whatever they wanted. One thing they bought was “a grabber”….a long handle with a pincher on the end so you could pick things up. Well, as Mike was driving they got out their new “grabber”and started picking up all little pieces of dirt, fuzz and whatever they found on the floor of the van and put them on top of Mike’s head! His hair was full of all kind of junk! They started to giggle and when I realized what they were doing I kept their secret….he had no clue what they did! It was a sight to see!!! We were all laughing because he looked so funny and he kept saying….”What’s so funny? What are you laughing about?” Of course when he found out what they did he didn’t think it was as funny as we did! That sure was a great trip….in fact I still have that “grabber!” After our stop at “South of the Boarder” we continued to drive all through the night until we arrived in Florida. As luck would have it we arrived early Sunday morning and, of course, I said we all had to go church! They were starving so we stopped for breakfast before church. Then I said….”Everyone bring a little bag with your toiletries and a change of clothes because when we’re done we will go in the rest room and get ready!” Of course they all thought I was crazy but we didn’t have a choice as we couldn’t get into our condo until later. But as they say, “God doesn’t give you any more than you can handle!” When we had our first daughter, Michele, everything was perfect! The nursery was all ready and so were we…everyone was so excited for our beautiful new baby! Of course back then there were no “gender reveal” parties. Everyone just looked at you and said “I think it’s a boy OR I think it’s a girl” based purely on how you carried the baby or how big your face got during your pregnancy!!! Even the doctors guessed the gender by how fast the baby’s heart rate was and said our last child was going to be a boy and along came our third daughter Nicole! I was a stay at home mom and having only one child was wonderful. I had time to spend with our new baby daughter Michele, cook, clean, wash and do the chores…such a wonderful time. We wanted more children and two years later along came Dena. And again a wonderful time…Michele, being 2 years old was a great “mommy’s little helper” and we both had fun taking care of Dena and I was still able to keep up with everything. Then it happened! Dena was 3 months old and I found out I was pregnant with our third child! Now things got a little crazy! I had a two year old, a three month old and carrying another baby! There were days I was so tired and it took all my energy to just get all of us dressed and fed. AND THEN THERE WERE THREE! After Nicole was born things changed quite a bit. Michele, now 3, Dena 1 and Nicole a new born. My days and nights were a blur! I remember one day running the vacuum with a glass of wine and crying! It was really hard to keep up with everything. If something didn’t get done I would worry and try to keep it up but that didn’t always happen. I was so tired all the time….when they napped, I napped! I just didn’t have the energy to do everything I did before. But as time went on things got easier. The girls got older, started school and I got back to a routine. Did it still get crazy at times…..yes! Did I get upset and yell….yes! But we got through it with a lot of tears, joy, conflict, love and laughter. Would a change anything…..absolutely not!!!! He had 2 kids - 3 & 1 I had none. His kids were everything to him. I watched him raise them from afar day in & day out. He would move mountains for them then & now. I’ll never forget when it hit me that I was crazy about him. He was away with them and the kids were asleep it was late , midnight to be exact and we were on the phone recapping the day of events. Question: Dena being middle child was she your most quiet and relaxed baby? Submitted by Renee from PA- Every child is different. Michele, our first born, was hard for me, never being a mom before, it was like she was my “practice baby!” I thought I knew what to do as a mother until it happened! Then everything I thought about motherhood never seemed like it was right. But you learn and just do it. Michele was a good baby and very smart. On her 2nd birthday she got the best gift ever…..her baby sister Dena! When Dena was born I felt a little more experienced and relaxed and she seemed to be too. And I thought “how cool” Dena and Michele have the same birthday just 2 years apart. How much fun was that going to be! But then it happened…..Dena was only 3 months old and I was pregnant again! How did that happen? LOL. There I was with a 2 year old, a three month old and pregnant again. We wanted more children but certainly did not plan for them to be so close in age. So, exactly 1 year and 1 day later our third child Nicole was born. Michele was three, Dena one and Nicole an infant! Trust me it was crazy…..3 children ALL in diapers at the same time! So Dena, not only being the middle child but also still a baby herself, being only 1 year old when Nicole was born, just went with the flow. She was always playing with her older or younger sister and they got along well as toddlers. They always had someone to play with and at times got into trouble together too! Dena just did what the other two were doing. At times it seemed easier for me having them so close together because they had each other to play with and learn from. As they got older you could see each ones personality develop. Michele the oldest and Nicole the youngest tended to be the loudest ones. Dena would just sit back, listen and not say much but she was taking it all in. When she became Miss New Jersey in 1995 and made appearances she got up and spoke very well and told funny stories. Everyone liked her and said she was so “down to earth.” Dena found her VOICE! From that point on she has not stopped talking…..as you all know! But I think the one that stands out the most would be: 1 Corinthians - Chapter 13 - Verses 4-8 Love is patient and kind; love is not jealous or boastful; it is not arrogant or rude. Love does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrong, but rejoices in the right. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends; as for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. This verse talks about LOVE. We all need to feel loved and show love to others. Love and kindness are the most important attributes we could have. Think of all the people we love. We love our parents, we love our children, we love our pets, we love our friends, we love our neighbors and the list goes on and on. To love someone and falling “in love” with someone are two different things. I know I love many people but that doesn’t mean I am “in love” with them. BUT….no matter which love it is the Bible verse in Corinthians still holds true. We all have our struggles and ups and downs and sometimes it is hard to show love. I know many times I have to step back and think about that person and remember that they may be having a bad day….just like I do at times….and try to be more patient and kind to them. And sometimes it is so HARD to love. But life is to short to be angry or upset….we only get this one time around and being angry is a waste of time. Whenever I talk on the phone to my children, grandchildren, relatives and friends and we are saying goodbye I always say…”Love you.” It is a simple thing but means a great deal. Those two little words could turn their day around just by hearing “Love you.” And you never know if they may be the last words you may speak to each other….but you/they will always remember that you love them! Question: There is an elderly lady in my neighborhood who lives alone. Do you have any suggestions of something that I could do to brighten her day? Submitted by Michele D Living alone has so many challenges. When you’re younger they are easier to manage but as you get older it can be very overwhelming at times. The hardest is the solitude….not having anyone to talk to or do things together. For me, I know I have to keep busy. Perhaps you could find out if there are senior events that your neighbor might want to attend to get her out and have some social activity with others. Some churches in our area have senior meetings twice a week to gather the seniors together. They enjoy a lite breakfast, some fun crafts, exercise and then feed them lunch before they go home. I don’t know if your neighbor is able to get out or do much, or if she even drives. If she can’t get out perhaps you could drop off a meal to her. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy….even something from Chick-Fil-A, Wendy’s or McDonalds can be a welcomed treat for someone who is shut in, especially if you top it off with a frosty or small sundae! If you know of any organizations that drop things off to seniors/shut-ins you may want to give them her name. I know prior to pandemic our church had a bread baking drive around Thanksgiving. Parishioners baked small loaves of banana bread, pumpkin bread or cranberry bread and they were distributed to seniors/shut-ins in our area. Dropping off a bouquet of flowers or small flowering plant around the holidays always cheers you up! Or fresh baked homemade cookies and who could resist a “box of chocolates!” Also with the colder weather coming in a new warm throw is something to cuddle up with. I love getting comfy with my fake fur throw…it makes me feel special! If you are friendly with her you could suggest going out for a lunch or having her over for a luncheon at your home. Even sending a note card to let her know you are thinking about her. Any act of kindness is so greatly appreciated when you are living alone, especially if she doesn’t get much company or have anyone to talk to. Why should he be the hottest dad of the year? I’m obviously bias, as this is my husband, sorry this is gonna be a bit lengthy , we were a second go round marriage. My boys were 4 & 7, his son was older, 12. Blended families are hard, add in ex’s for salt in the wound, they first year was rough on us all, but we settled in as a family of 5 and life just kept going. The men our 3 boys are today, is because of the role model my husband is. Just 2.5 years after we married, I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, a lot of men would have said, I didn’t sign up for this, not my man. He stepped up and not only worked but helped in the house, took me to doctors appointments, some 7 hours away, ran kids to practices and ball games. We married in 2004, I filed for disability in 2007, I was a RN. Took 18 months to win my disability, I lost my 401k, filed for bankruptcy, lost my great credit, he never blinked an eye. He said, we will get your credit back, it will be fine. He always drove the hand me down cars, so the kids and i had a safe and reliable car. We made it through all that, and then after 22 years at Wonder Hostess, in December 2012, the company filed for bankruptcy for their 2nd time and he lost his job, our health insurance, pension, everything he had worked all those years for. In January of 2013, he went back to college, he maintained a 4.0, was Mechatronics student of the year, while still parenting, being a wonderful husband and doing odd jobs to help put food on the table. At the end of 2015 he was hired on with First Energy Mobile Maintenance. He works a hard job, with long hours, out of town a lot. And still comes home and takes time to be with his mom, me and our first grand baby Addi. I don’t know how I got so lucky, but I did. To sum up, our 1 son that is married now, when he was dating his now wife, he had brought her home to meet us, when she left, she said, I want to marry a man that looks at me, the way Carl looks at your mom. Submitted by Anonymous From a very young age my mother always said to me…. ”You need to learn to be independent and responsible.” She taught me that I could do anything I wanted to as long as I put my mind to it. I tried to instill those traits in our three daughters and I do believe each one of them is independent and responsible and they in turn have taught their children as well. We do our best as parents and pray that when they leave the nest they will do well and be great adults. Some children learn faster/easier and others will struggle but, all in all, I do believe they will learn to be great people! I know from my own experience that we try to “tell” them what the best thing is to do but inevitably the final decision is up to them. And more often they may choose to do it “their way” and soon find out that Mom and Dad may have been right after all. I also think it is important that our children learn about their faith and have that to fall back on when needed during their lifetime, so no matter what faith you are, or practice, it is important to pass that on to them. As young adults they may question or fall away from their faith but hopefully as adults they will gradually go back and give to help others. I believe we are all here to help each other, in whatever small way we can, to encourage one another and to lift each other up. We are all given different talents by God and those talents should be used to give back to help others. I sew and make Prayer Quilts for people who are ill at our church. You may cook or bake and bring food or baked goods to others in need. You may know how to build things and help your neighbor. You may know how to sing and have joined the church choir. Whatever your gift is it is important to use that gift to give back. When our children see us do that they in turn will do it for others as well. It’s that old saying….”Practice what you preach!” So, whether they go off to college or just move out of the house hopefully they take with them everything we have taught them. They may flounder and fall at some point but they will have the skills and moral values that we have instilled in them to be kind, considerate, compassionate, independent and responsible adults! And now that they are gone Mom & Dad have plenty of “special time alone” with each other!!! Question: Making Easy Sewing Crafts Submitted by Vickie from Georgia I learned how to sew in high school and fell in love with it. My Home Economics teacher was tough. If you did something incorrectly she made you rip it out and do it all over again. I hated that….but realized that was the only way I would learn. After I was married I continued sewing - making some of my own clothing and “matching dresses” for our three daughters as they were growing up. I was a stay at home mom and money was tight so at least I could make them some clothes. Life got busy, the girls were all in school and I started to work again and finding time to sew was hard. Our church started a new Ministry and they were looking for volunteers. They were making “Prayer Quilts” for people who were sick and wanted the gift of prayer in the form of a quilt. My friend knew I sewed and asked if I would join. I told her I only made 1 quilt before, in a class I took years prior, and was not really knowledgeable in making quilts. But she said…”If you can make clothes you can make a quilt!” I joined and quickly I fell in love with sewing again! Ironically, I have not made any clothing for a long time…I’d rather go thrifting for that! LOL MY SEWING TIP: If you have a sewing machine and the desire to sew practice sewing a straight line. You’d be surprised how many things you can make if you can sew a straight line. You can make a throw pillow, place mats and yes even a quilt! Sewing is so relaxing to me….I concentrate on what I’m doing and forget all my problems. The time goes by quickly and there is a great sense of accomplishment when you see that flat piece of fabric suddenly turn into something you made! Sherry (Carrot) and Sarah (Salad) and I met our Sophomore year of high school and have been making each other laugh for over 35 years. There have been marriages, divorces, kids, bonus kids, tears, heartaches and every day joys we have each shared through the years but I think the best part of our trip was realizing how special it was to have shared a lifetime together. I’ve heard the saying “Men will come and go but girlfriends last forever”….and, for most part, that’s true. Of course, there have been friends I’ve loved dearly but we’ve grown apart…maybe due to miles or life circumstances, but I can say I’ve learned so much from my girlfriends (and if I’m honest…some hard lessons from women I’ve chosen NOT to be friends with) I think the best part of having strong relationships with women is the honesty. With the year I’ve had I think anyone would find themselves asking…”Is it me? Am I doing something that’s made the world mad?” It felt, at times, like the hits just kept coming. Question: How did you and Michael meet? My girlfriend, Lynn, and I were out driving around one night. That’s what you did in the 60’s. You’d put gas in your car; a gallon only cost .25 cents back then; and cruise around town “looking for something to do.” We were bored so Lynn said, “Let’s go to Mom Kinnoble’s,” which was a very small bar run by a woman who did not check anyone’s ID. I was 19 years old at the time…Mike was 21. I had never been there before but Lynn had. There were pool tables, dart boards, and one bowling lane….which had a “pin boy” in back of the machine who would set up the pins when you bowled! When we walked in Mike and his friend were shooting pool. She knew his friend and started to talk to him and he introduced us to Mike. They would come over and talk to us in between their shots. Mike wanted to buy me a drink but I already had gotten one so he put $1.00 down on our table (I think the drinks were .50 cents!) and said, “I’ll buy the next one.” We stayed a little while then left. I didn’t get another drink so I went over to Mike, gave him his $1.00 back and said thank you. There were no bell and whistles, they were just 2 nice guys. A few weeks went by, we were bored again and she said….”Let’s go back to Mom Kinnoble’s.” I said…”Ok, maybe those 2 guys will be there and they’ll buy us a drink!” They were there…..and they bought us drinks! When Mike saw me he said, ”Where have you been? I’ve been looking for you. Another girl came in one night and I thought it was you but she didn’t know who I was!” LOL. We started talking more and he asked if I’d like to get something to eat. I said “Yes!” We started dating but he was in the Navy, I think he was stationed in North Carolina then. He would come home on weekends when he could and we would go out. We wrote letters when he was deployed and dated when he was back in the states. We were dating about 2 years and he was transferred to Jacksonville, Florida, that’s when he asked me to marry him. We planned a big Italian Wedding here and I went back with him to Jacksonville, Florida, to live. We were married in May of 1968 and he was deployed to Vietnam in October of 1968. I decided to come back home and live with my parents for the 9 months of his deployment until he got back home. That was a hard time….you didn’t know if they were coming back. Not all did….he was one of the lucky ones he returned home and was finished his 4 years of duty in June of 1969 and Honorably Discharged from the US Navy! We then began our lives together in New Jersey, having sex and making babies! (You didn’t think I’d leave that part out did you!!!) And the rest is history….. Question from Carrie from Ontario: Your relationship with your daughter(s) is refreshing and beautiful. You definitely are a magnificent role model. Raising your children is the HARDEST job EVER!!! It is not easy, nor without difficulties. I tried to raise our three daughters like I was raised. We had love and fun in our home when I was growing up. It was just the four of us…Mom, Dad, my brother Dominic and ME! Being the oldest I had a lot of responsibility. In fact I was always told by my Mom….”You need to be responsible and independent!” And that’s what I became. Mom said….”I’m not going to be here forever so you need to know how to take care of yourself.” I tried to instill those same traits into our three daughters and they are ALL very responsible AND independent! When I was young we did things together as a family. We didn’t have a lot of money but we were happy. We went on picnics, took rides to the shore, went fishing and crabbing with Aunts, Uncles and cousins. We celebrated everything and praised each other for a job well done. Whether it was a game well played, good marks in school or a picture you colored (even thought it wasn’t “in the lines”) you were told…”Great job!” All those things gave me confidence that I could do anything I set my mind too! They told me I was doing a great job and I believed them! So, that’s how I tried to raise our daughters. Don’t get me wrong….the three girls were NOT without conflict. They had their disagreements like all children do. Sometimes we had family “meetings” to discuss what was going on and try to resolve some conflicts. But, they did not always agree on things. And that’s OK. We are individuals and see things differently. I’ve always told them if you are upset with each other you need to talk about it, try to come to a compromise and then move on and forget about it. LIFE IS TOO SHORT…don’t waste time being angry! It is NOT easy….but FAMILY FIRST always. Material things…money, cars, jewelry, etc, don’t mean anything. YOUR FAMILY, their health and happiness is what matters most. Then everything else will follow suit. The legacy you leave behind and hopefully, the example you have shown your children and grandchildren will inspire them to carry on those same things. Question from Denise, NJ… “What is your favorite dish to eat?” (A dish you love to cook and a dish you love to eat) My favorite dish to cook at home is my Italian Marinara Gravy! When I was young I remember my Mom making the “gravy” every Sunday morning. She would brown the meatballs and sausage and then cook them in the gravy for hours!!! The house smelled soooo good. I would go in the kitchen and she’d slice me a piece of fresh Italian bread put some of the gravy on top and sprinkle it with a little Locatelli Percorino Romano cheese on top….and call it homemade pizza! Boy was that good!!! (And that cheese was freshly grated by me or my brother.) She always bought the piece of cheese and we grated it at home…it sure does make a difference! I loved that homemade pizza! Now when I make my Marinara Gravy and put it on bread I think of those wonderful days!! I prefer the Marinara Gravy now as I don’t eat a lot of meat. It is quick, easy and oh so good! (Unlike sex which should be slow, passionate and AMAZING!) I serve it with pasta, ravioli or home made manicotti! The gravy people….the gravy! (Although you could serve this before or after sex!!!!) Or just put it on good Italian bread with a little grated Locatelli Percorino Romano cheese on top! Soo good….you can eat it with a spoon! My favorite dish to eat out would be seafood because I don’t cook it at home. I am really spoiled because all the fish I ever ate was caught fresh by us! My Dad loved to go fishing and crabbing….we would go as a family. So the only fish I ever ate was what we caught…flounder, blow fish, trout, etc. and blue claw crabs. I love seafood but only order it in places that I know it moves quickly or it is fresh caught. Fresh fish does not smell and if they bring me a fish dish that smells “fishy” I can’t eat it!
